During the spring and summer of 2012 Marysa Dowling engaged with young women in and around Islington, in the places they sat, moved through, shopped, talked, met, explored and enjoyed. Each young woman was asked to choose a piece of coloured paper, using this to make an object or shape expressing how she felt that day. Dowling’s simple aim was to make a series of portraits uncovering a little about who these young women are, where they spend their time and how they feel about themselves at this specific time in their lives.
Together the images provide a subtle and insightful portrait of young women; capturing and celebrating both their individuality and their shared experiences; in the space between childhood and adulthood, in the heart of the city.
